tear
The fiber has been chosen because of the history it holds. For the NYC street performance I gathered gauze and some old muslin. Acorns, pomegranate and a combination of tea and coffee was used to shift the color, bringing my hand to the material before sharing it with others.
I've always loved the sound of fabric being torn. I've come to believe that it is the soundtrack for the lives we are living, fraught with conflict and inequality. I was surprised to experience that about 40% of the folks who participated in this score had not previously torn fabric. For them my simple invitation became a revelation bringing them a deeply somatic understanding or becoming undone. Together we speculated about how household habits change over time and wondered about practices of rag making and repurposing materials before or instead of discarding or passing them on.
